Federal Hill House Services

"We constantly alter and upgrade our programs to meet ever-changing community needs."

In the early 1900s, floods of Italian immigrants settled in the Federal Hill community. Their basic needs were evident, so "FHH" established programs to help the immigrants become well adjusted, self-sustaining citizens who could integrate into the American way of life. Home management, social behavior, citizenship, and English classes, economics, and a host of other programs were started, all with a dual focus: immediate needs and immediate help. The efforts of those programs helped many future leaders in all walks of life.

FHH programs today continue to meet similar social needs throughout the community, though we constantly alter and upgrade our programs to meet ever-changing community needs.

For people who require personal and/or social assistance, we provide both in-house and outreach services.

The following are our current Federal Hill House Services:

Social Services

Our Social Services Program offers help in a spectrum of emergency and social categories, some of which are:

• ESL (English as a Second Language) and GED (Graduate Equivalency Diploma) classes

• Citizenship classes

• Computer training classes

• Emergency food

• Referrals to the furniture bank

• Counseling for victims of domestic violence, and

• Counseling for victims of random street violence with an evolving focus on youth violence

Bundles of Joy Family Resource Center

Unique to FHH, our Bundles of Joy program serves families with children pre-natal to five years of age. The "baby shop" and family resource center deliver information, support, and encouragement to young families in need. We provide baby clothes, toys, books, diapers, formula, and other essential items, all free to families with young children. This outstanding program currently has 65 enrolled families, and it partners with a number of professional agencies such as Hasbro Children Hospital, the Providence Center, and Bradley Hospital, to name a few.

Early Child Learning Center

Toddler & Pre-school Programs. Our Toddler and Pre-school programs meet the necessities of today’s working parents in the Federal Hill community. As a childcare provider licensed by the Department of Children, Youth and Families, we follow both their guidelines and those of the Department of Education. The Early Child Learning Center is recognized as an outstanding childcare agency in the City of Providence.

Our Early Childhood Learning Center Director is certified in Early Childhood Education, and is complemented by a well-qualified, caring, dedicated, and talented staff. Our programs integrate developmentally appropriate subjects such as reading, math, science, and social studies. We nurture the child and offer breakfast, hot lunches, and nutritious snacks. In addition, the program offers children field trips, arts and crafts, and healthful exercise that also helps develop hand-eye coordination.

Our Early Child Learning Center operates daily, Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Before- and After-School Programs

As the number of school-age children with working parents continues to rise, Federal Hill House is meeting the growing demand for childcare through its quality before- and after-school programs. Overriding goal: provide affordable childcare by creating a stimulating, yet safe environment in which the children can flourish. Under the direction of caring teachers and tutors, children receive attention, support, and supervision with emphasis on their individual needs.

Every weekday, children have supervised homework time and nutritious snacks, as well as crafts and other physical or educational activities. Numerous field trips scheduled throughout the school year promote wellness and social and team-building skills.

In the summer when children are in our facility all day, fun activities are planned including visits to a local swimming pool and trips to the beach.

Senior Programs

Established in 1973, the FHH senior program, among the oldest in the state, provides services to the elderly, disabled, and handicapped. Senior participants both serve as volunteers, and are served at the center. A lunch program hosted by Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island provides a diversified, well balanced, nutritious menu from Monday through Friday with transportation provided for those who require it.

Guest speakers present educational lectures, films, and materials on areas of life related to senior citizens. Medical professionals provide free health screenings. Our program also offers many recreational opportunities including shopping trips, bingo, movies at local theaters, and Tai Chi.

Senior programs operate weekdays, Monday through Friday.

Foster Grandparent Program

Like all programs at FHH, the Foster Grandparent Program evolved from a need within the community. A Corporation for National Services program, it enables all ages and backgrounds to make their communities safer, healthier, and stronger through service.

Our "FGP" program is affiliated with nearly 50 sites throughout Providence, including public and private schools, home day-care sites, Family Court, and community centers.

Seniors age 60 and older serve as mentors, tutors, and caregivers for children and youth with special needs, offering emotional support to children who have been abused and neglected. Foster Grandparents receive a modest tax-free stipend, reimbursement for transportation, meals during service, annual physical exams, and accident and liability insurance while on duty. The Foster Grandparent Program also enables participants to share a lifetime of experience with youth, and to support youth and build bridges across generations.
